How Prevalent is TBI?
Traumatic brain injuries have received a lot of media attention
due to the high profile cases, including football players and other
athletes. What people do not realize is the high
frequency of traumatic brain injuries that occur everyday during
normal activities. Every 15 seconds someone in the U.S. sustains
a traumatic
brain injury according to the Brain Injury Association. The
traumatic brain injuries leave about 80,000 Americans with long-term
disabilities every year, causing permanent cognitive and emotional
problems. The costs associated to the 1.5 million Americans that
suffer a traumatic brain injury every year can be extensive. The
Brain Injury Association estimates hospital and fatal injury costs
relating to traumatic brain injuries in the U.S. exceed $48 billion
annually.
Every fifteen seconds someone will sustain a traumatic
brain injury in the US, most likely caused by a vehicle crash, fall,
or sports injury. The data shows that the risk of a second traumatic
brain injury triples after the initial injury, and after a second
TBI the risk of a third becomes eight times greater. Over 5.3 million
Americans are estimated to currently live with a disability from
a traumatic brain injury according to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, costing more than $48 billion in hospital and fatal
injury costs every year.

Traumatic Brain Injury Detection
A traumatic brain injury can cause physical, cognitive,
social, and vocational changes that affect an individual for a short
period of time or permanently. Some traumatic brain injury (TBI)
cases are difficult to detect
because even a CT
scan can show proper brain functioning despite brain damage
being present. Some symptoms may not appear until much after the
injury. Unless the traumatic brain injury is serious a neurologist
will often times not schedule with the patient. A regular physician
may not catch a problem in a routine office visit. If
you, or a family member, has suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI)
and would like to speak with a traumatic brain injury lawyer, please
contact us.

BREAKING
NEWS!! JUNE
2003
"Alzheimer’s
disease and brain injury"
A study published in the June 2003 issue of the Archives of
Neurology has linked a gene associated with Alzheimer’s
disease to be the same one possibly linked to posttraumatic
brain injury seizures. Researchers think that APOE (epsilon
4) gene may increase the risk of suffering seizures following
a traumatic brain injury. Brain injury patients with the epsilon
4 variation had a 2.41 times greater risks of late posttraumatic
seizure than patients without that gene.
